THE STUDENT
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
WHO WE ARE, AND WHAT WE DO.
The Student Alumni Association (SAA) is a student group focused on promoting school spirit and philanthropy, connecting students with alumni, and sharing the greatest University traditions. Established in 1998 as the Student Foundation Association, SAA works in connection with the Islander Alumni Association to enhance the student experience on campus and prepare students for life after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Our Senior Class Gift Scholarship endowment recognizes student leaders at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and gives them the opportunity to pay for their tuition through varies programs such as “Walk of Recognition” and general fundraising.
TRADITION PROTECTORS.
In 1947, an anchor was left on campus by the United States Navy after it ceased operations on Ward Island. Not knowing what to do with this piece of iron, one of the University’s first Presidents, R. M. Cavness, dedicated it to the freshman class in 1949.
As time carried on, it became tradition for each freshman class to care for the anchor’s maintenance. This included scrubbing it clean with toothbrushes and giving it a fresh coat of white paint each year. Eventually, the anchor became a beloved symbol of the University of Corpus Christi. Students would even carry the anchor to sporting events and other campus activities. Eventually, during a series of pranks with a rival institution in the 1960’s.
A second anchor was placed on campus during Homecoming celebrations in February 2015, and to keep with tradition today, Student Alumni Association hosts ‘Anchors Aweigh.’ A Celebration in which the anchor is painted white during the week of Homecoming to connect past to present, and to honor the spirit of the University of Corpus Christi and the days of the Tarpons.
